Role of Bill of Lading

When the carrier issues a bill of lading to a shipper of goods, he is bound by the terms and conditions of the Hague/Hague-Visby rules as amended, to deliver cargo safely to the place of destination.
One of the main requirements of the Hague-Visby Rules is that due diligence must be exercised to ensure that the vessel is seaworthy at the beginning of the voyage. 
If cargo is damaged during transit because the vessel in unseaworthy because of the want of due diligence at the beginning of the voyage, the carrier will be liable for the said damage.
