Crew accommodation
1. Company meet minimum standards ensuring that accommodation for seafarers working or living on board is
- Safe
- Decent
- In accordance with the requirements set out in the MLC2006
- Ships are inspected to ensure initial and ongoing compliance with the code.
2. Operational requirements to fulfil above shall include the following:a) Proper lighting and sufficient drainageb) Natural light and provided with adequate artificial lightc) Accommodation and recreational and catering facilitiesd) Ventilation and heatinge) Separate sleeping rooms shall be provided for men and for womenf) Sleeping rooms shall be properly equipped so as to ensure reasonable comfort and to facilitate tidinessg) A separate berth for each seafarer shall in all circumstances be providedh) The furniture shall include a cloth locker of ample space and a drawer or equivalent space, combined locker and drawer with shelf and lock.i) Sleeping room shall be provided with a table or desk with comfortable seating accommodation as necessary.j) Laundry facilityk) Ships regularly trading to mosquito-infested ports shall be fitted with appropriate devices as required by competent authorityl) Appropriate seafarers’ recreational facilities, such as a TV, reading Materials and space for recreational activities, reasonable access to ship-to-shore telephone communications, email and internet facilities, where available, with any charges for the use of these services being reasonable in amount.
3. Inspection of ship:
- When a ship is registered or re- registered; or
- Accommodation on the ship has been substantially altered.
4. Existing company’s ship shall comply with the Merchant Shipping (Crew Accommodation) regulations, if applicable.5. Company’s ships constructed on or after the date the MLC 2006 come into force shall comply with the requirements of MLC 2006.6. Master to maintain documented inspections of accommodation by or under his authority at intervals not exceeding 7 days, shall be carried out on board with respect to ensuring that seafarer accommodation is clean, decently habitable and maintained in good state of repair.
