OverviewRegistration is the process whereby a ship, entitled by the law of a Flag State, is entered in the official register of the State, in the name of the owner or owners, or the bareboat charterer.
As a Master, during first registration of your ship or during change of Flag, you have to interact with the Flag State, Ship registry and Recognized Organization.

Which ship can be taken as an Indian ship?
A ship shall not be considered to be an Indian ship, unless it is owned wholly by, person(s)/a company or a body/co-operative society, to each of whom/which, any of the following clauses apply:-
- The person is a citizen of India; or
- A company or a body established by or under any Central or State Act, which has its principal place of business in India; or
- A co-operative Society which is registered or deemed to be registered under the Co-operative Societies Act, 1912, or, any other law relating to Co-operative Societies for the time being in force in any State
The Act applies to which vessels?
- To any vessel which is registered in India; or,
- To any vessel which this Act requires such a vessel to register under this Act; or,
- To any other vessel which is owned wholly by persons to each of whom any of the descriptions stated in previous para applies, wherever the vessel may be.
- Unless otherwise expressly provided, the provisions of this Act which apply to vessels other than those referred to above shall so apply only while any such vessel is within India, including the territorial waters thereof.
